• Mineral Oil - Poster

This safety poster covers essential information and advice relating to Mineral Oil

This poster states:
Warning! Mineral Oil is harmful if swallowed or inhaled and can cause irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract.

Oil Ingestion: Mineral Oil is a cathartic. Its affects may result in serious diarrhea, nausea, vomiting or abdominal cramping. Aspiration into the lungs can also cause chemical pneumonia. Do not induce vomiting if mineral oil is swallowed. Only if conscious, give large quantities of water (note, never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person). Get medical attention without delay.

Oil Inhalation: Can cause irritation to the respiratory tract. Symptoms include coughing and shortness of breath. Aspiration pneumonia may result from mist or vapour produced. Guide affected person(s) to fresh air and get medical attention where appropriate. Provide oxygen to those with difficulty breathing and artificial respiration to those not breathing.

Contact with Eyes: Eyes irritation and discomfort (similar to that caused by motor oil) may result from mists or fumes. Continuously flush eyes immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes post event, lifting lower and upper eyelids on occasion. Medical attention should be given immediately.

Contact with Skin: Extended contact may cause irritation and possibly dermatitis due to hypersensitivity. Wash skin immediately and over a sustained 15 minute period with plenty of water. Contaminated clothing and shoes should be removed and medical attention arranged. Wash/clean any effected clothing or shoes before reuse.

Chronic Exposure: Repeated or prolonged skin exposure may cause dermatitis. Untreated and mildly-treated oils are listed by both NTP and IARC as human carcinogens (note, highly refined mineral oils are not classified in this way). Aggravation of Pre-existing Conditions: Those with pre-existing skin disorders or impaired respiratory function could be more susceptible to mineral oils

Handling and Storage: Mineral Oil should be kept in a tightly closed container and stored in a cool, dry, ventilated area away from sources of heat or ignition. Store mineral oil away from combustible or reactive materials and in an area protected against physical damage and away from direct sunlight. Containers used for this material may be hazardous even when empty as they retain vapor and liquid residues. Warnings and precautions listed for any mineral oil product should be observed and where appropriate acted on.
